# U2 (Berlin U-Bahn)

The U2 is a 20.7 km long line of the Berlin U-Bahn with 29 stations, built in sections since 1902, connecting Pankow in the northeast via Alexanderplatz, Potsdamer Platz and Zoologischer Garten with Ruhleben in the west.

## Overview

The U-Bahn line U2 runs from Pankow in the northeast via the eastern city centre (Alexanderplatz), Potsdamer Platz, the western city centre (Wittenbergplatz, Zoologischer Garten) to Ruhleben in the west. It has 29 stations and a length of 20.7 km. The section between Potsdamer Platz and Zoologischer Garten belonged to the trunk line opened in 1902, the first Berlin U-Bahn; the section Pankow–Vinetastraße was last extended on 16 September 2000. The line was opened in several sections between 1902 and 2000; the oldest section of today's line belongs to the trunk line of 18 February 1902 (section Potsdamer Platz–Zoologischer Garten: 11 March 1902).

## Operator

Operated by [Berlin Transport Company (BVG)](/en/organizations/bvg.html).

## History

The western part of today's U2 belongs to the trunk line of the Berlin U-Bahn opened on 15/18 February 1902 (section Potsdamer Platz–Zoologischer Garten from 11 March 1902); by 1929 the line had been extended to Ruhleben. After the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, the line's route was divided: the eastern section ran as line A of the BVB, the western section as line 2 of the BVG. In 1993 the two parts were reunited as the continuous line U2, with the last extension taking place on 16 September 2000 from Vinetastraße to Pankow.
