The U6 is the oldest line of the Munich U-Bahn and, at 27.4 km, has the longest route of the network; the network was opened with it in 1971, and it serves 26 stations from Garching-Forschungszentrum to Klinikum Großhadern.

## Overview

U-Bahn line U6 runs over 27.4 km between Garching-Forschungszentrum in the north and Klinikum Großhadern in the south-west, serving 26 stations. The line colour is blue. The U6 is the oldest line of the network: on 19 October 1971 the first section of the Munich U-Bahn network was opened; the tunnel beneath the Lindwurmstraße between Sendlinger Tor and Goetheplatz partly dates back to the years 1938–1941. For the 1972 Summer Olympics the line was led to Olympiazentrum. In 2006 the line was extended northwards via Garching-Hochbrück, Garching and Garching-Forschungszentrum – making it the only U-Bahn line to leave the city area of Munich. A western extension to Martinsried is under construction.

In the inner-city section the U6 runs together with the U3 on the Stammstrecke 1 from Münchner Freiheit via Odeonsplatz, Marienplatz and Sendlinger Tor to Implerstraße.

## History

The U6 is the oldest line of the Munich U-Bahn; the tunnel beneath the Lindwurmstraße between Sendlinger Tor and Goetheplatz was built as early as 1938–1941 as part of a planned S-Bahn. On 19 October 1971 it began operations as the first line of the network between Kieferngarten and Goetheplatz. To the south it was extended in 1975 to Harras, in 1983 to Holzapfelkreuth and on 22 May 1993 to Klinikum Großhadern; to the north it reached Garching-Hochbrück on 28 October 1995 and the Garching-Forschungszentrum on 14 October 2006. An extension to Martinsried is expected to open in 2027.
