It was spun off as an independent company on 5 August 2019, with DiDi co-founder Zhang Bo as CEO. Under its "mixed dispatch" model, riders requesting a trip in the DiDi app can choose autonomous service, and the platform assigns an autonomous vehicle when the pick-up and drop-off points lie inside its operating area. ## History DiDi set up its autonomous driving R&D unit in 2016 and built research and testing teams in China and the United States. On 5 August 2019 the unit became an independent company. On 27 June 2020 DiDi opened its autonomous driving service to the public for the first time in Jiading, Shanghai. In 2022 it obtained a remote testing permit with no safety driver and a robotaxi commercial operating permit in Guangzhou; commercial operation started in Huadu, Guangzhou in March 2023. In 2025 DiDi ran fully driverless tests covering peak hours, night-time and rain in Beijing and Guangzhou. The new-generation mass-produced robotaxi R2 was delivered in January 2026 and entered passenger testing in Beijing and Guangzhou that August. ## Funding and vehicle partnerships DiDi Autonomous Driving raised over US$500 million in its first round in May 2020 (led by SoftBank Vision Fund 2), US$300 million in early 2021 (led by IDG Capital), a US$298 million Series C in October 2024 (led by GAC Group) and a RMB 2 billion Series D in October 2025.
