    "body": "## Overview\n\nThe VAG Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Nürnberg (VAG) was founded in 1959 as an independent company and is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Städtische Werke Nürnberg. It operates urban public local transport in Nuremberg (partly also in the surrounding area, e.g. Fürth) and is a member of the Verkehrsverbund Großraum Nürnberg (VGN). With around 2,300 employees and almost 400 vehicles, it keeps the Nuremberg transport system running; its roots go back to the Nürnberg-Fürther Straßenbahn (from 1881).\n\n## Operations\n\nThe VAG operates:\n\n- The three U-Bahn lines U1, U2 and U3 of the Nuremberg U-Bahn, including with the U3 the first fully automatic U-Bahn in Germany (opened in 2008; the U2 followed in 2010, the U1 is operated conventionally with drivers).\n- The Nuremberg tram with several lines.\n- A dense bus network (city bus) in Nuremberg and into the surrounding area.\n\n## History\n\nThe roots of the VAG lie in the horse tram Nürnberg–Fürth opened on 25 August 1881, which was taken over by the city of Nuremberg in 1903; omnibuses have run in Nuremberg since 1923. In 1959, as part of a reorganisation of the Städtische Werke Nürnberg, the transport company was spun off as Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Nürnberg (VAG), while the tram vehicles continued to run under the name Nürnberg-Fürther Straßenbahn until 1981. The VAG is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Städtische Werke Nürnberg and a member of the Verkehrsverbund Großraum Nürnberg (VGN).",
