It operates urban public local transport in Nuremberg (partly also in the surrounding area, e.g. Fürth) and is a member of the Verkehrsverbund Großraum Nürnberg (VGN). In 1959, as part of a reorganisation of the Städtische Werke Nürnberg, the transport company was spun off as Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Nürnberg (VAG), while the tram vehicles continued to run under the name Nürnberg-Fürther Straßenbahn until 1981.
