# Zoox

Zoox is an autonomous driving company founded in 2014 that became an independently operated subsidiary of Amazon in 2020. Headquartered in Foster City, California, it develops a purpose-built robotaxi with no steering wheel or driver's seat and launched an autonomous ride-hailing service in Las Vegas in 2025.

## Overview

Zoox was founded in 2014 by Jesse Levinson and Tim Kentley-Klay and joined Amazon in 2020 as an independently operated subsidiary. Headquartered in Foster City, California, it employs more than 3,000 people and is led by CEO Aicha Evans together with co-founder and CTO Jesse Levinson.

## History

In 2016 Zoox received permission from California to test autonomous vehicles with safety drivers; in 2018 it received a permit to carry passengers autonomously with a safety driver. Aicha Evans became CEO in 2019 and the fleet began testing in Las Vegas. In 2020 Zoox joined Amazon and unveiled its purpose-built robotaxi with no steering wheel and no driver's seat. In 2023 Zoox became the first company to operate a purpose-built robotaxi on public roads, in Foster City and Las Vegas. In 2024 testing extended to San Francisco and the Las Vegas Strip, and to Austin and Miami.

## Service and production

In 2025 Zoox opened the first serial production facility in the United States dedicated to purpose-built robotaxis and launched its autonomous ride-hailing service in Las Vegas. Its testing fleet operates across the San Francisco Bay Area, Las Vegas, Seattle, Austin, Miami, Los Angeles, Atlanta and Washington, D.C.
