**Charles J. Pedersen** was a chemist who studied coordination chemistry and crown ethers. He shared the 1987 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with Donald J. Cram and Jean-Marie Lehn; the official motivation cited their development and use of molecules with structure-specific interactions of high selectivity.[^s2]

Pedersen was born in Pusan, Korea (now South Korea), later settled in Salem, New Jersey, and died there. He attended schools in Nagasaki and Yokohama before studying in the United States, where he earned a bachelor's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Dayton and a master's degree in organic chemistry from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At the time of the award, he was affiliated with Du Pont in Wilmington, Delaware.[^s1][^s3]

## Research career

Pedersen joined Du Pont in 1927 and spent his 42-year career as a chemist there, retiring in 1969. His early work included metal deactivators for petroleum products and the oxidative degradation of petroleum products and rubber; he later also worked on polymers. In 1960, he returned to coordination chemistry. An experiment yielded a small quantity of unknown white crystals that he identified as dibenzo-18-crown-6, the first crown ether. He spent the last nine years of his career studying crown ethers.[^s3]

The year's chemistry laureates are listed in [[work_nobel_prize_1987|Nobel Prize 1987]].

[^s1]: The Nobel Foundation, “Charles J.
