    "body": "Cheng Bing was a Confucian official of Eastern Wu in the Three Kingdoms period. The Records of the Three Kingdoms say his courtesy name was Deshu and that he came from Nandun in Runan, so the title stays his personal name. This entry records his life as 172 to 225; the biography itself says only that he died of illness in office and gives no year for his death.[^wikidata][^zhengshi]\n\n## Study and entry into Wu\n\nThe record says he was able to serve Zheng Xuan, and later, fleeing the wars, went to Jiaozhou, where he discussed the meaning of the classics with Liu Xi and came to master the Five Classics. The Jiaozhi grand administrator Shi Xie made him chief clerk. Sun Quan heard of him as a renowned scholar and summoned him with ceremony, and on arrival Cheng Bing was made grand tutor of the crown prince.[^zhengshi]\n\n## The imperial bride and his advice\n\nIn the fourth year of Huangwu, Sun Quan arranged for the crown prince Sun Deng to marry a daughter of Zhou Yu, and Cheng Bing, acting as minister of ceremonies, went to Wu commandery to receive the bride. Sun Quan came aboard Cheng Bing's boat in person, a mark of great honor. After he came back, Cheng Bing calmly advised Sun Deng that marriage is the beginning of human relations and the foundation of royal instruction, which is why the sage kings valued it and why the Odes put the Guanju first, and he urged the prince to honor ritual propriety in the inner quarters and keep in mind the Zhounan odes, so that moral influence would flourish above and songs of praise would rise below. Sun Deng laughed and answered that he would depend on his tutor to help him follow what was good and correct what was wrong.[^zhengshi]\n\n## Death and writings\n\nHe died of illness in office and left the Zhouyi zhai, the Shangshu bo and the Lunyu bi, more than thirty thousand characters in all.
