<body>Cheng Ji was a figure of the late Eastern Han and early Shu Han. Chinese Wikipedia gives his courtesy name as Jiran and says he came from Langzhong in Ba Commandery. Wikidata uses 程畿 and Cheng Ji as his labels and records his death in the second year of Zhangwu in Shu Han (222), so the title stays as his personal name.[^zhwiki][^wikidata]&#xA;&#xA;## Under Liu Zhang&#xA;&#xA;When Liu Zhang held Yi Province, Cheng Ji was magistrate of Hanchang. Chinese Wikipedia says Zhang Lu ignored Liu Zhang&#39;s orders and later held Hanzhong; Liu Zhang sent Pang Xi against him without success and then made him grand administrator of Baxi to hold Zhang Lu off. The Hanchang area had the Cong people, whom Pang Xi enlisted, and someone used this to accuse him to Liu Zhang, who grew suspicious. After Zhao Wei rebelled and was killed, Pang Xi became afraid and wanted to protect himself, so he sent Cheng Ji&#39;s son Cheng Yu to ask his father for the Cong troops.[^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;Cheng Ji answered that raising private troops was not in itself rebellion and that loyalty and duty were enough even if others slandered one, but that he could not follow someone who turned disloyal out of fear of false charges. He scolded his son that, having received favor from the province, he owed loyalty to its governor, and that Cheng Yu, as a commandery clerk, should serve the grand administrator and not trade on his father. Pang Xi was furious and threatened his family; Cheng Ji cited the story of Yue Yang, who ate soup made of his own son for the sake of duty, and said he would do the same. Pang Xi came round, sent heavy gifts to Liu Zhang in apology, and was forgiven, and Cheng Ji was promoted to grand administrator of Jiangyang.[^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;## Yiling&#xA;&#xA;After Liu Bei took Yi Province and became its governor, he appointed Cheng Ji as libationer attached to the staff. In the second year of Zhangwu (222) Cheng Ji went with Liu Bei on the eastern campaign against Sun Quan. When the Shu army was crushed and withdrew up the river, someone told him the pursuers had caught up and that he could escape if he abandoned the boat. He replied that he had never retreated in battle since joining the army, still less now that he was with the emperor in danger. He fought the pursuers with his halberd and was killed, outnumbered.[^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;## In the novel&#xA;&#xA;In chapter 84 of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, when the Wu banners suddenly fall, Cheng Ji tells Liu Bei that it is Lu Xun testing them, but Liu Bei does not believe him. After the Shu army is routed he refuses to retreat with the others and, seeing no way out, kills himself with his sword. This differs from the historical account above.[^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;## Basic facts&#xA;&#xA;- Name: Cheng Ji[^wikidata]&#xA;- Courtesy name: Jiran[^wikidata][^zhwiki]&#xA;- Origin: Langzhong in Ba Commandery; the birthplace linked on this entry is [[place_cn_511381|Langzhong]][^wikidata]&#xA;- Death recorded on this entry: second year of Zhangwu, Shu Han (222)[^wikidata]&#xA;- Realm: Shu Han[^wikidata]&#xA;- Occupation recorded on this entry: political figure[^wikidata]&#xA;- Portrayal: [[person_cn_q124397482|Cheng Ji]] (a character in Romance of the Three Kingdoms)</body>
