Dongtuna is a fictional character in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Wikidata's Chinese label and the title of the Chinese Wikipedia article are both 董荼那, and Wikidata also lists the variant 董荼奴, so the heading stays as it is. He is a southern tribal commander under Meng Huo. Wikidata describes him as Meng Huo's subordinate general, places the work in the Shu Han period, and records 225 as the year of his death.[1][2]

Identity

Chinese Wikipedia says he comes from the Five Streams caves of the southern tribes and is the second cave marshal under the southern king Meng Huo.[2]

In the novel

According to the article's summary, he, together with his colleagues Jinhuan Sanjie and Ahuinan, guarded the Five Streams caves against the Shu Han army on its first southern campaign. They fell into an ambush, were defeated and captured, and were then released. After fleeing south of the Lu River he was ordered to stop the Shu general Ma Dai, who had crossed the river secretly and taken Jiashan Valley, and to win back the grain route. On going out to fight he was abused by Ma Dai as shameless and withdrew red-faced. Back at his camp he seized the drunken Meng Huo and delivered him to the Shu army, for which he was rewarded. The article adds that after Meng Huo was released by the Shu army a second time, Dongtuna was assassinated and his body was thrown by the river together with Ahuinan's. These events come from the article's summary of the novel, and its listed references are chapters 87 and 88 of the novel.[2]
