<body>Fa Zhen was a great Confucian scholar of the Eastern Han. The Book of the Later Han, in its chapter on recluses, calls him Fa Zhen, courtesy name Gaoqing. Wikidata also uses Fa Zhen and records him as born in 100 and dead in 188, so the title stays the personal name.[^wikidata][^zhengshi]&#xA;&#xA;## Family and learning&#xA;&#xA;The Book of the Later Han says Fa Zhen, courtesy name Gaoqing, with one version writing the second character differently, came from Mei in Fufeng and was a son of Fa Xiong, grand administrator of Nanjun. He loved study and did not confine himself to one school. He knew the classics and charts inside and out and was a great scholar of Guanxi. Several hundred pupils came from afar, among them Fan Ran of Chenliu.[^zhengshi] The Chinese Wikipedia article adds that he was the grandfather of Fa Zheng, a leading minister of Shu Han.[^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;## Refusing office&#xA;&#xA;The Book of the Later Han says he was quiet by nature, had few desires, and did not meddle in other people&#39;s affairs. When the grand administrator invited him to an interview, Fa Zhen came in a plain headcloth. The administrator said that Duke Ai of Lu was no worthy ruler, yet Confucius called himself his subject, and he asked Fa Zhen to condescend to serve as officer of merit and help the court. Fa Zhen replied that because he was treated with courtesy he dared to sit at the bottom as a guest, but that if he were to be made a clerk he would go north of the northern hills and south of the southern hills. The administrator was frightened and did not speak of it again. He declined calls from the ministers&#39; offices and nominations as a worthy man.[^zhengshi]&#xA;&#xA;Tian Ruo of the same commandery recommended him to the court as a man who mastered the four fields of the Odes, Documents, Rites and Music, deep in learning, content in seclusion, who would not bend for black and crimson silks. Tian Ruo recommended him again when Emperor Shun toured the west. The emperor sincerely wished to bring him in and summoned him four times. Fa Zhen said that since he could not hide his form from the world, why should he drink the water that washed ears, and he withdrew still further and never gave in.[^zhengshi]&#xA;&#xA;## Assessment and death&#xA;&#xA;His friend Guo Zheng praised him, saying that Fa Zhen&#39;s name could be heard but the man himself was hard to meet, that he fled fame and fame followed, avoided fame and fame pursued, and that he could be called a teacher of a hundred generations. Together with the villagers Guo Zheng had a stele cut in his praise and called him Master Xuande. He died of old age at eighty-nine in the fifth year of Zhongping, 188.[^zhengshi] The Chinese Wikipedia article agrees with this account.[^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;## Basic facts&#xA;&#xA;- Name: Fa Zhen[^zhengshi]&#xA;- Courtesy name: Gaoqing[^zhengshi]&#xA;- Honorific: Master Xuande[^zhengshi]&#xA;- Dates recorded on this entry: 100–188[^wikidata]&#xA;- Origin: Mei county, Fufeng[^zhengshi]&#xA;- Realm: Eastern Han[^wikidata]&#xA;- Portrayal: [[person_cn_q124334455|Fa Zhen]] (a character in Romance of the Three Kingdoms)</body>
