"body": "Lu Junyi is an important character in Water Margin. Wikidata's Chinese label and the Chinese Wikipedia article title are both Lu Junyi, and he is also called the Jade Qilin. It is his name in the book, so the heading stays the same. Wikidata records him as a character of the novel, set in the Song state, with the death year 1120.[^wikidata][^zhwiki]\n\n## Position\n\nAccording to the Chinese Wikipedia article, in Water Margin he is the deputy leader of the Liangshan marsh band, second only to Song Jiang. His family seat is Daming prefecture, the northern capital (now Daming in Hebei), where he is a rich man and a master of spear and staff known far and wide. He is tall, fair-faced and star-eyed, and imposing. The article says he is finally forced to join Liangshan against the court.[^zhwiki]\n\n## Going up to Liangshan\n\nThe article records that Song Jiang heard of his fame and wanted him to join. Wu Yong used a scheme of luring the tiger away from the mountain, going to Daming with Li Kui to trick Lu Junyi into traveling afar. Lu Junyi fell for it, packed up and left home to avoid disaster, and was captured passing Liangshan. He refused to join and Song Jiang did not force him but let him go home. Back in Daming he was betrayed by his steward Li Gu and his wife Lady Jia, who told the officials he was in league with bandits. He was jailed and sentenced to exile on Shamen Island. The guards Dong Chao and Xue Ba took a bribe from Li Gu to kill him in the wild, but his trusted servant Yan Qing saved him. He was soon caught again by soldiers and his sentence changed to death. When the Liangshan heroes learned of this they attacked Daming, captured Guan Sheng and Suo Chao, broke the city and freed him. Lu Junyi went home and killed Li Gu and Lady Jia, then formally joined Liangshan, and at Zengtou Market he took alive Shi Wengong, the killer of Chao Gai.[^zhwiki]\n\n## The contest for leadership and the campaigns\n\nThe article says that Song Jiang once wanted to follow Chao Gai's last wish and make Lu Junyi chief of the stronghold. The brothers would not agree and Lu Junyi declined, so they agreed that each would lead the same number of troops against Dongping and Dongchang prefectures and the first to break his city would be chief. Song Jiang captured Dong Ping by a trick and took Dongping. Lu Junyi was pinned down at Dongchang by Zhang Qing's flying stones, the two forces together could not take it, and only an advance by land and water from Liangshan beat Dongchang, which also settled Song Jiang as the leader and Lu Junyi as second. After accepting the amnesty with Song Jiang he campaigned against the Khitan, Tian Hu, Wang Qing and Fang La, and rose to a martial-merit grandee and pacification commissioner of Luzhou.[^zhwiki]\n\n## Ending and assessment\n\nThe article records that after the wars the court made him pacification commissioner of Luzhou and deputy commander. Yan Qing urged him to resign and leave before the treacherous ministers could harm him, but he refused. Gao Qiu and Yang Jian then feared him and put mercury in the wine and food the emperor had granted him. After eating, he was in such pain that he could not ride, and he slipped into the Huai river at Sizhou and drowned. The article quotes Gong Kai's praise in the Song Jiang Thirty-Six Eulogies, which compares him to a white jade qilin, and Jin Shengtan's remark that Lu Junyi is written with great effort but still shows some dullness, like a drawn camel, huge but not handsome.[^zhwiki]\n\n## Basic facts\n\n- Name: Lu Junyi, nicknamed the Jade Qilin, also called Squire Lu[^wikidata][^zhwiki]\n- Home: Daming prefecture, the northern capital[^zhwiki]\n- Setting recorded on this entry: the Song state[^wikidata]\n- Appears in: [[work_cn_q70827|Water Margin]][^zhwiki]",
