During the wars that followed the rise of Dong Zhuo, he returned to his home in Wen and urged local elders to leave the area. During a later famine, he cared for his clan and instructed his younger brothers.[^zhengshi] Cao Cao summoned Sima Lang to serve in his administration. He later held county offices, served as a record keeper to the chancellor, and became Inspector of Yan Province. He proposed that provinces and commanderies maintain troops and that the well-field system be restored; these proposals were not adopted. His administration in Yan was praised for its leniency.[^zhengshi] ## Death During the campaign against Wu in 217, an epidemic spread among the troops.
