<body>Sun Yi was a member of the royal house of Eastern Wu at the end of the Eastern Han. The Records of the Three Kingdoms say his courtesy name was Shubi and that he was a younger brother of Sun Quan, so the title stays his personal name. Wikidata also lists the alternative name Sun Yan, and the Dianlüe commentary says his given name was Yan. This entry records his life as 184 to 204.[^wikidata][^zhengshi]&#xA;&#xA;## Origin and temper&#xA;&#xA;Chinese Wikipedia says he was from Fuchun in Wu commandery, the third son of Sun Jian and a full younger brother of Sun Ce and Sun Quan. The Records of the Three Kingdoms say he was fierce, bold and decisive, like his brother Ce. The grand administrator Zhu Zhi recommended him as filial and incorrupt, and the minister of works Cao Cao summoned him too. The commentary quoting the Dianlüe says that when Sun Ce was dying, Zhang Zhao and others thought he should hand his troops to Sun Yan, who was Sun Yi and who was like Ce in temper, but Sun Ce called for Sun Quan and gave him the seals. Chinese Wikipedia adds that Sun Yi was severe and impatient and gave free rein to his moods, and that Zhu Zhi often rebuked him on grounds of principle.[^zhengshi][^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;## Acting grand administrator of Danyang&#xA;&#xA;In the eighth year of Jian&#39;an he became general of the flank and acting grand administrator of Danyang at the age of twenty. The Records say he was later killed by his attendant Bian Hong, who was himself executed at once.[^zhengshi] Chinese Wikipedia gives more detail. After arriving he treated Gui Lan and Dai Yuan with courtesy, men who had hidden in the mountains after Sun Quan killed Sheng Xian, grand administrator of Wu. He made Gui Lan commander of the troops and Dai Yuan assistant to the commandery, but the two wanted revenge for Sheng Xian, grew close to Bian Hong, were criticized by Sun Yi several times, and plotted to kill him. In the ninth year of Jian&#39;an the magistrates of the counties of Danyang came to see him together. His wife Lady Xu cast a divination for the banquet, said the omen was bad and urged him not to hold it, but he did not listen. He normally wore a sword when going in and out, but that day, a little drunk, he saw the guests off unarmed, and Bian Hong cut him down from behind.[^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;## His wife&#39;s revenge&#xA;&#xA;According to Chinese Wikipedia, Bian Hong fled into the mountains and was caught by men Lady Xu sent after him. Gui Lan and Dai Yuan put all the blame on Bian Hong and had him beheaded, but the soldiers of both Sun Yi and Sun Quan held the two men to be the real culprits. Sun He, grand administrator of Lujiang, hurried to Wanling and rebuked them for failing in their duty, and they killed him too. Gui Lan took over Sun Yi&#39;s troops, property and concubines and wanted to take Lady Xu as well, who pretended to agree and secretly contacted Sun Yi&#39;s officers Sun Gao, Fu Ying and Xu Yuan to kill Gui Lan and Dai Yuan, then made an offering of their heads at Sun Yi&#39;s tomb. When Sun Quan reached Danyang with his army he also sacrificed at the tomb in person, promoted Sun Gao and Fu Ying to commanders of the gate, and rewarded them with gold, silver and silk.[^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;## Descendants and assessment&#xA;&#xA;The Records say his son Sun Song became colonel of the Shesheng guard and Marquis of Duxiang, and died in the third year of Huanglong. Zhuge Liang wrote to his brother Zhuge Jin that Sun Song was a fine vessel and that he wept at the gifts Sun Song had given him; this is said to be reported by Zhuge Liang&#39;s adopted son Zhuge Qiao. Chen Shou&#39;s assessment is that Sun Yi was fierce, bold and decisive, with the manner of his brother Ce.[^zhengshi][^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;## Basic facts&#xA;&#xA;- Name: Sun Yi, courtesy name Shubi, also called Sun Yan[^zhengshi][^zhwiki][^wikidata]&#xA;- Life: 184 to 204[^wikidata]&#xA;- State or dynasty: Eastern Wu, Eastern Han[^wikidata]&#xA;- Derived figure: [[person_cn_q123681164|Sun Yi]] (character in Romance of the Three Kingdoms)</body>
