# Lin Hongyu

Lin Hongyu is a maid in Dream of the Red Chamber, later called Xiaohong; her story includes an exchange of handkerchiefs with Jia Yun.

**Lin Hongyu** (Xiaohong) is a fictional maid in [Dream of the Red Chamber](/en/works/dream-red-chamber.html), part of the Rongguo household [^wikidata] [^zhwiki]. Her name is changed to Xiaohong or Hong'er because it conflicts with the names Lin Daiyu and Jia Baoyu [^zhwiki].

## Story

She serves in Yihong Court and is later taken into Wang Xifeng's service after proving capable at errands [^zhwiki]. She and Jia Yun meet through a handkerchief exchange, a story known as "A lovesick girl loses a handkerchief" [^zhwiki].

## Later chapters

In the 40-chapter continuation compiled by Cheng Weiyuan and Gao E, she continues serving Xifeng and has a brief exchange with Jia Yun in chapter 88 [^zhwiki].
