<body>Zhu Ling was a general of Cao Wei. The Records of the Three Kingdoms, juan 17, attaches his biography to that of Xu Huang. Chinese Wikipedia gives his courtesy name as Wenbo and his origin as Shu county in the state of Qinghe, and Wikidata gives the labels 朱灵 (traditional form 朱靈) and Zhu Ling with the alias Wenbo. The title stays as his personal name.[^zhengshi][^zhwiki][^wikidata]&#xA;&#xA;## From Yuan Shao to Cao Cao&#xA;&#xA;The Records say Zhu Ling began as a commander under Yuan Shao. When Cao Cao attacked Tao Qian, Yuan Shao sent him to lead three camps in support, and he won merit. The other generals Yuan Shao had sent all went home, but he said he had seen many men and none like Cao Cao, a true lord, and having met him he would not go elsewhere. He stayed, and the soldiers under him, who admired him, stayed too. Chinese Wikipedia dates this to the fourth year of Chuping (193) and adds that two years earlier Yuan Shao had sent him against Ji Yong, who held his home county of Shu. The defenders put his mother and brother on the wall to lure him to surrender; he wept and said that a man who has gone out to serve cannot think of his family, fought hard, took the town and captured Ji Yong, and his family were all killed.[^zhengshi][^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;## Under Cao Cao&#xA;&#xA;Chinese Wikipedia records that in the fourth year of Jian&#39;an (199) Cao Cao sent Zhu Ling and Lu Zhao with Liu Bei to Xu Province to stop Yuan Shu; Yuan Shu died of illness and Liu Bei killed Che Zhou and took Xiapi. Later Cao Cao wanted to remove Zhu Ling&#39;s command and sent Yu Jin with a few dozen horsemen and an order to his camp; neither he nor his men dared move, and he became a subordinate of Yu Jin. He then took part in the pacification of Ji Province in 205 and the killing of the rebel Cheng Ang at Yangzhai, in the Red Cliffs campaign of 208 as one of seven armies under the supervisor Zhao Yan, in the Tong Pass campaign of 211 as Xu Huang&#39;s deputy, with Xiahou Yuan at Chang&#39;an the year after, and in Cao Cao&#39;s campaign against Zhang Lu in 215 as Zhang He&#39;s deputy.[^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;## Under Wei&#xA;&#xA;The Records say he later became a fine general whose fame was second to Xu Huang and others, rising to General in the Rear and receiving a fief; the edict of Cao Pi after his accession says he had helped the late ruler for many years in command of troops, with authority beyond Fangshu and Shao Hu and merit above Zhou Bo and Guan Ying. Chinese Wikipedia adds that Cao Pi first meant to enfeoff him in his home county, but at his own request he was made Marquis of Gaotang. In the second year of Taihe (228) he took part in the battle of Shiting, the last time the histories mention him. He died soon after, was posthumously named Wei, and his son Zhu Shu inherited the fief.[^zhengshi][^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;## Differing dates&#xA;&#xA;Wikidata records him as born in 170 and dead in 223. Chinese Wikipedia says only that he was born in the 170s and died in or after 228, with the Shiting campaign the last record of him. The two do not agree, and this entry lists both without choosing between them.[^wikidata][^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;## Basic facts&#xA;&#xA;- Name: Zhu Ling[^zhengshi]&#xA;- Courtesy name: Wenbo[^zhwiki]&#xA;- Origin: Shu county in the state of Qinghe; the birthplace linked on this entry is [[place_cn_371400|Dezhou]][^wikidata]&#xA;- Dates: Wikidata 170–223; Chinese Wikipedia 170s to 228 or later[^wikidata][^zhwiki]&#xA;- Realm: Cao Wei, earlier under Yuan Shao[^zhengshi]&#xA;- Portrayal: [[person_cn_q123914607|Zhu Ling]] (a character in Romance of the Three Kingdoms)</body>
