Wikidata names him the Ziwei Emperor. The full title is the Great Emperor of the Purple Tenuity of the North Pole in the Central Heaven. That is a ritual title, not a separate personal name. The cited article gives several origins that do not agree, so the heading stays the Ziwei Emperor. This entry lists him among the figures of Journey to the West. The encyclopedia does not narrate an episode from that novel.[^wikidata][^zhwiki] ## The god He is one of the Four Sovereigns and the second son of Doumu, the star lord of the Purple Forbidden enclosure. Daoism places that enclosure at the center of the stars. He assists the Jade Emperor in charge of the stars, the sun, and the moon, and is lord of the stars. He is also a symbol of earthly emperors and especially governs the fortune of the imperial house. His four sage-lords are [[person_cn_q10022741|Marshal Tianpeng]], Marshal Tianyou, the Assisting Sage, and the Protecting Sage. In Chinese Buddhism, Chan and Tiantai temples sometimes honor him as one of the twenty-four heavenly guardians.[^zhwiki] ## Accounts that do not agree One account calls him a transformation of the Most High Lord Lao. The article quotes the Treatise on Buddhism and Daoism in the Book of Wei: the Daoist school says it comes from Laozi, who dwells above in the Jade Capital as the ancestor of divine kings and below in the Purple Tenuity as lord of flying immortals. The novels also differ. Investiture of the Gods enfeoffs Boyi Kao, killed while trying to save his father King Wen of Zhou, as the Ziwei Emperor. Annals of the Sword of the Peak has Sun Bin, in order to break the Hundun formation, summon Liu Bang, then a standard-bearer of the state of Han and said to be a reincarnation of the Ziwei Emperor of the North Pole. These accounts do not yield one personal name.[^zhwiki] ## Basic facts - Divine title: Ziwei Emperor[^wikidata] - Full title: Great Emperor of the Purple Tenuity of the North Pole in the Central Heaven[^zhwiki] - Description: one of the Four Sovereigns of Daoism[^wikidata] - Listed on this entry under: [[work_cn_q70784|Journey to the West]] /people/ziwei-emperor.html en zh en Character in Journey to the West true mythological figure relation_cnworks_depicts_q70784_q10466408 work_cn_q70784 depicts person_cn_q10466408 work_cn_q70784 zhwiki-characters Related works work_cn_q70784 Journey to the West /en/works/journey-to-west.html true depicts Related works relation_cnworks_depicts_q70784_q10466408 work_cn_q70784 depicts person_cn_q10466408 work_cn_q70784 zhwiki-characters Related works work_cn_q70784 Journey to the West /en/works/journey-to-west.html true en zh en is_fictional Fictional yes person_category Person category mythological figure disambiguation Disambiguation Character in Journey to the West 1 50 1 1 1
