"body": "## History\n\nFoshan is said to have “originated in the Jin dynasty and taken its name in the Tang”[^gz-gov-2023]. In 628, the second year of the Zhenguan era, villagers of Jihua township in Nanhai County unearthed three bronze Buddha statues at Tapo Hill and renamed the township “Foshan”; the name has been recorded ever since[^gz-gov-2023]. In the Ming and Qing dynasties the town of Foshan was counted, together with Hankou in Hubei, Jingdezhen in Jiangxi and Zhuxianzhen in Henan, among the “Four Great Towns” of China[^gz-gov-2023]. In 1920 the seat of Nanhai County moved to Foshan[^gz-gov-2023]. In December 2002 the county-level cities of Nanhai, Shunde, Gaoming and Sanshui were converted into districts, giving Foshan its “one city, five districts” structure[^bayarea-foshan].\n\n## Geography\n\nFoshan is a prefecture-level city of Guangdong[^mca2023], located in the core of the Pearl River Delta and adjoining Guangzhou[^gz-plan-2021]. The city covers 3,797.72 km²[^wikidata].\n\n## Subdivisions\n\n5 county-level or higher divisions[^mca2023]:\n\n- [[place_cn_440604|Chancheng District]] (district, 440604)\n- [[place_cn_440605|Nanhai District]] (district, 440605)\n- [[place_cn_440606|Shunde District]] (district, 440606)\n- [[place_cn_440607|Sanshui District]] (district, 440607)\n- [[place_cn_440608|Gaoming District]] (district, 440608)\n\n## Population\n\nAt the end of 2024 the city had 9.6989 million residents, and the urbanisation rate stood at 95.64%[^foshan-gov-2024]. In 2020 the population was 9.499 million[^wikidata].\n\n## Economy\n\nIn 2024 the city's GDP was 1.3362 trillion yuan, with the three sectors accounting for 1.8%, 50.3% and 47.9%[^foshan-gov-2024]. GDP grew by 6.1% a year on average between 2013 and 2024, and per-capita GDP reached the 130,000 yuan level in 2024[^foshan-gov-2024]. The number of industrial enterprises above designated size passed 10,000 in 2024, and advanced manufacturing made up 52.5% of their value added[^foshan-gov-2024]. The private sector generates more than 60% of GDP and more than 90% of market entities; by 2024 the city had 1.71 million market entities[^foshan-gov-2024].\n\n## Culture\n\nFoshan has 15 national, 56 provincial and 155 municipal intangible cultural heritage items (2024)[^mct-2024]. Cantonese opera (Yueju) is inscribed on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list, and Chancheng District hosts the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Museum, built around Cantonese opera, Shiwan ceramic sculpture and related traditions[^mct-2024]. Wing Chun was added to the fifth national list of intangible cultural heritage items in 2021[^foshan-gov-yongchun-2021]. Foshan is known as “China's City of Martial Arts” and as a major birthplace of southern martial arts; kung fu, lion dance and dragon boat racing are signature cultural symbols[^foshan-gov-wushu-2026]. Shunde District is one of the birthplaces of Cantonese cuisine and was designated a UNESCO City of Gastronomy in 2014[^unesco-shunde]. Shiwan pottery, xiangyunsha (gambiered Canton silk), lion dance and martial arts, Shunde cuisine and the Dijiao dragon boat are representative intangible heritage assets[^foshan-gov-intangible-2026].\n\n## Transport\n\nThe Guangfo Line opened on 3 November 2010 as China's first underground intercity rail line and Foshan's first metro line[^gh-metro-2025]. Foshan West railway station opened in 2017, and the Foshan West–Guangzhou South section of the Guangfo intercity loop opened in 2024[^foshan-metro-3]. Metro Line 3 links Foshan West station and Foshan Shadi Airport with the wider network[^foshan-metro-3]. In 2024 the Pearl River Delta Hub (Guangzhou New) Airport was approved and Foshan Shadi Airport opened the world's first modular terminal building; by the end of 2023 the city's expressway network reached 560 km[^foshan-gov-2024].\n\nMetro lines[^cptond]:\n\n- [[concept_foshan_metro_line_nanhaiyouguidianche1haoxian|Foshan Nanhai Tram Line 1]]\n- [[concept_foshan_metro_line_2|Line 2 (Foshan Metro)]]\n- [[concept_foshan_metro_line_3|Line 3 (Foshan Metro)]]",
