<body>**El Monte** is a city in [[place_us_ca_los_angeles_county|Los Angeles County]], [[place_us_ca|California]], United States[^geonames]. It lies in the San Gabriel Valley, east of the city of [[place_us_ca_los_angeles|Los Angeles]][^s1].&#xA;&#xA;## Geography&#xA;&#xA;El Monte lies between the San Gabriel and Rio Hondo rivers on a low-lying tract about 4 miles wide and 7 miles long, with deep, rich alluvial soil[^s3]. The city has a total area of 9.65 square miles (24.99 km²), of which 9.56 square miles (24.77 km²) is land and 0.89% is water; its elevation is 299 feet (91 m)[^s1]. It has a Mediterranean climate (Köppen Csa)[^s1].&#xA;&#xA;## History&#xA;&#xA;The area is part of the homeland of the Tongva people[^s1]. Between the 1770s and 1830s, Spanish missionaries and soldiers often stopped here and named the area &#34;El Monte&#34;, which in the usage of that era meant &#34;meadow or marsh&#34; or &#34;the wooded place&#34; rather than &#34;mountain&#34;[^s3]. The Old Spanish Trail, established in 1829, passed through the area to Mission San Gabriel[^s1]. The first permanent residents arrived in 1849–1850, during the California Gold Rush[^s3]. In the 1850s Captain Johnson, from Lexington, Kentucky, proposed naming the village &#34;Lexington&#34;; when the State Legislature organised townships, it named the area El Monte Township, with the Village of Lexington as its seat, and two years later the town&#39;s name reverted to El Monte[^s3]. During the American Civil War, the community had Confederate sympathies[^s3].&#xA;&#xA;In 1873 the Southern Pacific built a railroad through the town, and in 1907 Pacific Electric intercity railway service was extended to El Monte[^s3]. El Monte was incorporated as a city on 18 November 1912[^s1]. From 1925 to 1942, Gay&#39;s Lion Farm was a well-known local attraction that raised more than 200 African lions for the film industry[^s1]. During the Depression of the 1930s, some orchards and groves were subdivided into homesites[^s3], and the federal Subsistence Homestead project was carried out here[^s1]; the El Monte berry strike took place in 1933[^s3]. The population boomed in the 1940s and early 1950s[^s3]. The Asian population grew significantly between 1980 and 2008[^s1].&#xA;&#xA;## Population&#xA;&#xA;El Monte had a population of 109,450 at the 2020 census and 113,475 at the 2010 census; the Census Bureau estimated its population at 105,075 on 1 July 2025[^s2]. The population density in 2020 was 11,452.3 people per square mile[^s2]. In 2020, Hispanic or Latino residents made up 64.7% of the population and non-Hispanic Asian residents 30.1%[^s1].&#xA;&#xA;## Municipal government&#xA;&#xA;El Monte has a council–manager government; the city council consists of an elected mayor and six council members elected by district[^s1]. The city has its own police department, while fire and emergency medical services are provided by the Los Angeles County Fire Department[^s1].&#xA;&#xA;## Economy and transport&#xA;&#xA;The early economy was agricultural, producing wool, honey, grain, fruit, castor oil, hops and cotton, among other goods; in the early 20th century, fruit orchards, walnut groves, truck farms and dairies replaced most of the earlier field crops[^s3]. According to the city&#39;s 2018 Comprehensive Annual Financial Report, the three largest employers were school districts, followed by the car dealership Longo Toyota-Lexus[^s1]. Cathay Bank has a corporate center in the city[^s1].&#xA;&#xA;Interstate 10 and Interstate 605 intersect in El Monte[^s3]. The J Line of the [[organization_la_metro|Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority]] terminates at El Monte station, Foothill Transit&#39;s Silver Streak bus rapid transit passes through via the El Monte Busway, and Metrolink&#39;s San Bernardino Line stops at El Monte station; the city also operates El Monte Transit[^s1]. The general aviation airport [[place_san_gabriel_valley_airport|San Gabriel Valley Airport]] is located in the city[^s1].</body>
