# Berlin Hauptbahnhof

Opened in 2006 as Europe's largest crossing station, Berlin Hauptbahnhof is Berlin's central railway hub with 14 platform tracks on two levels and around 329,000 travellers and visitors per day (2019).

## Overview

Berlin Hauptbahnhof was officially opened on 26 May 2006 and entered scheduled service on 28 May 2006 together with the North–South long-distance rail link. It was built on the site of the former Lehrter Bahnhof and, as Germany's largest crossing station, is one of 21 stations in the highest category (Preisklasse 1) of DB Station & Service. According to Deutsche Bahn's own figures, around 329,000 travellers and visitors used the station daily in 2019.

## Services

- Long-distance rail: [ICE 10](/en/concepts/ice-10.html), [ICE 11](/en/concepts/ice-11.html), [ICE 12](/en/concepts/ice-12.html), [ICE 18](/en/concepts/ice-18.html), [ICE 28](/en/concepts/ice-28.html), [ICE 29](/en/concepts/ice-29.html); plus IC/EC, Nightjet and FlixTrain connections
- S-Bahn: Served on the upper level by the Stadtbahn (including S5, S7, S9); the North–South S-Bahn link (S21) is under construction
- Regional rail: Several RE, RB and IRE lines serve the upper and lower platform levels

## Station layout

The station spreads over five levels with a height difference of up to 25 m. The upper level (Stadtbahn) has four long-distance and regional tracks plus two S-Bahn tracks, while the lower level (North–South tunnel) has eight long-distance and regional tracks — 14 platform tracks in total. The lower level also contains two U-Bahn tracks (initially line U55, part of [U5](/en/concepts/ubahn-berlin-u5.html) since 2020).
