About 3.66 million inhabitants (2022 census) live on around 892 km² – Berlin is also Germany's largest city. Its ISO-3166-2 code is DE-BE. After reunification in 1990, Berlin received the full status of a federal state.\n\n## Administrative divisions\n\nAs a city state, Berlin is city and state at once; there are no rural districts. Instead, the city is divided into 12 boroughs (e.g. Mitte, Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf, Neukölln), which perform the tasks of municipal administration.\n\n## Major cities\n\n- Berlin (as a city state, the city constitutes the entire state)\n\n## Transport\n\nBerlin's U-Bahn network with lines [[concept_ubahn_berlin_u1|U1]] to U9 is operated by [[organization_bvg|BVG]], complemented by the Berlin S-Bahn.
