Hamburg is a city state on the Elbe and Alster with around 755 km² and about 1.85 million inhabitants (2022 census); it is Germany's second-largest city.

## Overview

The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg lies on the Elbe around 100 km from the North Sea and, with about 1.85 million inhabitants (2022 census), is Germany's second-largest city. A dense metropolitan area is concentrated on around 755 km². Its ISO-3166-2 code is DE-HH. Hamburg was a founding state of the Federal Republic in 1949.
