In 628, the second year of the Zhenguan era, villagers of Jihua township in Nanhai County unearthed three bronze Buddha statues at Tapo Hill and renamed the township “Foshan”; the name has been recorded ever since[^gz-gov-2023]. In the Ming and Qing dynasties the town of Foshan was counted, together with Hankou in Hubei, Jingdezhen in Jiangxi and Zhuxianzhen in Henan, among the “Four Great Towns” of China[^gz-gov-2023]. In 1920 the seat of Nanhai County moved to Foshan[^gz-gov-2023]. GDP grew by 6.1% a year on average between 2013 and 2024, and per-capita GDP reached the 130,000 yuan level in 2024[^foshan-gov-2024]. The number of industrial enterprises above designated size passed 10,000 in 2024, and advanced manufacturing made up 52.5% of their value added[^foshan-gov-2024]. The private sector generates more than 60% of GDP and more than 90% of market entities; by 2024 the city had 1.71 million market entities[^foshan-gov-2024].\n\n## Culture\n\nFoshan has 15 national, 56 provincial and 155 municipal intangible cultural heritage items (2024)[^mct-2024]. Cantonese opera (Yueju) is inscribed on UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage list, and Chancheng District hosts the Guangdong Cantonese Opera Museum, built around Cantonese opera, Shiwan ceramic sculpture and related traditions[^mct-2024]. Wing Chun was added to the fifth national list of intangible cultural heritage items in 2021[^foshan-gov-yongchun-2021]. Foshan is known as “China's City of Martial Arts” and as a major birthplace of southern martial arts; kung fu, lion dance and dragon boat racing are signature cultural symbols[^foshan-gov-wushu-2026].
