# Chiba

A prefecture in the Kanto region of Japan, with its capital at Chiba City.

## Overview

Chiba is a first-level administrative division of [Japan](/en/places/japan.html) in the Kanto region. Its area is about 5,158 km2 and its population about 0.1 million (2024), with its capital at Chiba.

## History

Sakura and Onogawa domains existed in the Edo period; the prefecture was formed in 1873 after the domain abolition.

## Geography and industry

Narita International Airport, Tokyo Disney Resort and Cape Inubo at Choshi are famous. Peanut and pear production lead the nation; the bay-side cities of Urayasu and Funabashi are commercial hubs.

## Transport

No Shinkansen passes through, but the Sobu Rapid Line and Narita Express link it with Tokyo.
