# Kagoshima

A prefecture in the Kyushu region of Japan, with its capital at Kagoshima City.

## Overview

Kagoshima is a first-level administrative division of [Japan](/en/places/japan.html) in the Kyushu region. Its area is about 9,187 km2 and its population about 0.0 million (2024), with its capital at Kagoshima.

## History

Comprising the old provinces of Satsuma, Osumi and the Amami Islands; Satsuma domain (Shimazu clan) controlled Ryukyu and produced Saigo Takamori and Okubo Toshimichi, leaders of the Restoration. The prefecture was created in 1871.

## Geography and industry

Sakurajima, Sengan-en, Kirishima, Yakushima (World Heritage) and Amami Oshima are famous; kurobuta pork, sweet-potato shochu and Chiran tea are renowned.

## Transport

[Kyushu Shinkansen](/en/concepts/jp-shinkansen-kyushu.html) terminates at Kagoshima-Chuo, about 80 minutes from Hakata, serving as the gateway of southern Kyushu.
