    "body": "## Overview\n\nMiyagi is a first-level administrative division of [[place_japan_country|Japan]] in the Tohoku region. Its area is about 7,282 km2 and its population about 0.0 million (2024), with its capital at Sendai.\n\n## History\n\nDate Masamune, founder of Sendai domain, built Sendai Castle and its castle town in 1600. After the abolition of the domains in 1871 the present prefecture was formed in 1876.\n\n## Geography and industry\n\nIt is the economic and cultural center of Tohoku, with Sendai a designated city. Matsushima (one of Japan's three scenic views), the Sendai Tanabata Festival and gyutan beef tongue are famous; oyster and scallop fishing thrive.\n\n## Transport\n\n[[concept_japan_shinkansen_tohoku|Tohoku Shinkansen]] reaches Sendai in about 90 minutes from Tokyo; [[concept_japan_shinkansen_akita|Akita]] and [[concept_japan_shinkansen_yamagata|Yamagata Shinkansen]] trains also serve Sendai, the largest terminal in Tohoku.",
