Its area is about 7,777 km2 and its population about 0.0 million (2024), with its capital at Shizuoka.\n\n## History\n\nContested by the Imagawa, Takeda and Tokugawa clans in the Sengoku era; Sunpu domain (Tokugawa Ieyasu's Sunpu Castle) and shogunal lands followed in the Edo period, and the prefecture formed in 1876.\n\n## Geography and industry\n\nMount Fuji (World Heritage), Izu hot springs (Atami, Shuzenji) and Lake Hamana are famous. Green tea production leads Japan; mandarins, strawberries and tuna (Yaizu, Shimizu ports) are distinctive. Shizuoka and Hamamatsu are designated cities.\n\n## Transport\n\n[[concept_japan_shinkansen_tokaido|Tokaido Shinkansen]] stops at Atami, Shin-Fuji, Shizuoka, Kakegawa and Hamamatsu.",
