Its area is about 9,323 km2 and its population about 0.0 million (2024), with its capital at Yamagata.\n\n## History\n\nThe Mogami clan held Yamagata Castle in the Sengoku era; in the Edo period Yamagata and Shonai (Sakai) domains existed, and the prefecture was formed in 1876.\n\n## Geography and industry\n\nCherries and La France pears are produced at a national-leading scale. The Zao snow monsters, Ginzan Onsen, Yamadera (Risshaku-ji) and Shonai food culture are famous.\n\n## Transport\n\n[[concept_japan_shinkansen_yamagata|Yamagata Shinkansen]] Tsubasa trains run from Fukushima via the Ou line to Shinjo.",
