<body>Zoucheng is a county-level city administered by Jining in southern Shandong, and the home town of the philosopher [[person_cn_q188903|Mencius]]. The state of Zhu (邾) was founded here in the Western Zhou and later became the state of Zou; a county was established under the Qin, was renamed Zou County in the early Tang, and in October 1992 the county was converted into a city. In 1994 Zoucheng was designated a National Historical and Cultural City.[^zhwiki][^mca1992]&#xA;&#xA;## History&#xA;&#xA;The state of Zhu was founded in the area of present-day Zoucheng in the Western Zhou and was later renamed the state of Zou.[^zhwiki] The Qin established a county here, which kept the name through the Han, Jin and the Northern and Southern dynasties; in the early Tang the character in its name was changed and it became Zou County.[^zhwiki] On 4 October 1992 the Ministry of Civil Affairs approved abolishing Zou County and establishing the county-level city of Zoucheng over the same territory, directly under Shandong province;[^mca1992] it is now administered by [[place_cn_370800|Jining]].[^mca2023]&#xA;&#xA;## Geography&#xA;&#xA;Zoucheng lies in southern Shandong, with [[place_cn_370881|Qufu]], Yanzhou and Sishui to the north, Tengzhou and Weishan to the south, Linyi to the east and Rencheng to the west. The land falls from east to west and from north to south. The climate is a warm-temperate continental monsoon climate, with an annual mean temperature of about 14 °C and annual precipitation of about 771 mm.[^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;## Administrative divisions&#xA;&#xA;The city governs three subdistricts and thirteen towns,[^zhwiki] and its administrative division code is 370883.[^mca2023] The city government sits at No. 2699 Pingyang East Road in Qianquan Subdistrict.[^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;## Monuments and sites&#xA;&#xA;The city has more than 300 cultural relics and historic sites, including five Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level and eight at the provincial level. The temple and residence of Mencius, together with the Mencius cemetery and the cemetery of Mencius’s mother, are known as the “four Meng” sites; the cliff inscriptions of Tieshan, Gangshan, Geshan and Jianshan, carved in the Northern and Southern dynasties, form the “four mountains” of calligraphy. Other sites include Mount Yi, the tomb of the Ming Prince of Lu and the old city of the state of Zhu.[^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;Zoucheng and neighbouring Qufu are together called the “home of Confucius and Mencius”.[^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;## Economy and transport&#xA;&#xA;Coal mining and coal-fired power are the leading industries; coal-bearing land covers 357 km². The Beijing–Shanghai railway stops at Zoucheng station, National Highway 104 passes through, and the Beijing–Shanghai expressway crosses the city.[^zhwiki]&#xA;&#xA;## Basic facts&#xA;&#xA;- Administrative division code: 370883[^mca2023]&#xA;- Area: 1,616.56 km²[^wikidata]&#xA;- Population: 1,166,559 (2020 census)[^zhwiki]&#xA;- Seat: No. 2699 Pingyang East Road, Qianquan Subdistrict[^zhwiki]&#xA;- Established: October 1992 (county converted into city)[^mca1992]</body>
