品特生于伦敦，是英国剧作家及剧场导演，作品包括舞台剧、广播、电视及电影剧本，早期作品经常被归入荒诞派戏剧[^s3]。他的第一部剧作《房间》写于1957年，第二部《生日派对》（1957年）起初受到评论界冷遇，直到《看门人》（1960年）大获成功，才确立了他的剧坛地位[^s3]。
