La linea percorre un tracciato a ferro di cavallo da Nordwestring attraverso il centro fino a Großreuth bei Schweinau. È stata inaugurata il 14 giugno 2008 come prima metropolitana completamente automatica e senza conduttore di Germania. Tra Rathenauplatz e Rothenburger Straße la U3 condivide i binari con la U2. La linea è stata più volte prolungata: nel 2011 e nel 2017 all'estremità nord (fino a Nordwestring) e il 15 ottobre 2020 sul lato sud fino a Großreuth bei Schweinau; ulteriori prolungamenti verso Kleinreuth e Gebersdorf sono in costruzione.\n\n## Gestore\n\nIl gestore è la [[organization_vag_nuernberg|VAG Norimberga]].\n\n\n## Storia\n\nLa U3 ha avviato l'esercizio il 14 giugno 2008 ed è stata la prima metropolitana di Germania a circolare in modo permanente senza conduttore (dal 15 marzo 2008). Il ramo nord è stato prolungato nel 2011 fino a Friedrich-Ebert-Platz e nel maggio 2017 fino a Nordwestring.
