Pubblica la Guida MICHELIN, nata come risorsa di viaggio per gli automobilisti; le stelle ai ristoranti furono introdotte nel 1926. ## Panoramica Il Gruppo Michelin fu fondato nel 1889 a Clermont-Ferrand dai fratelli André ed Édouard Michelin. Pubblica la Guida MICHELIN e le selezioni di ristoranti per le aree coperte[^guide]. ## Origini della guida La guida fu inizialmente ideata per incoraggiare gli automobilisti a viaggiare. Offriva mappe e informazioni pratiche, come cambiare uno pneumatico e trovare carburante, oltre a elenchi di luoghi dove mangiare e pernottare. Le prime edizioni erano gratuite. Nel 1920 la guida iniziò a essere venduta; furono aggiunti elenchi per categorie di hotel e ristoranti di Parigi e venne eliminata la pubblicità a pagamento[^guide]. ## Valutazione dei ristoranti Con la crescente influenza della sezione dedicata ai ristoranti, la guida iniziò a inviare ispettori anonimi nei locali. Nel 1926 furono assegnate le prime stelle ai ristoranti di alta cucina, inizialmente una sola. Nel 1931 fu introdotta una gerarchia da zero a tre stelle; i criteri vennero pubblicati nel 1936[^guide].
