西蒙·范德梅尔是荷兰加速器物理学家。他发明了随机冷却技术：通过探测并反馈校正粒子束中粒子的偏差，使反质子束的密度与亮度大幅提高，从而使欧洲核子研究中心（CERN）的质子-反质子对撞机能够以足够高的亮度运行，并于 1983 年发现 W 玻色子与 Z 玻色子；他与卡洛·鲁比亚因“对大型项目质子-反质子对撞机的决定性贡献”共享 1984 年诺贝尔物理学奖[^s1][^s2]。
