Nel 628, secondo anno dell'era Zhenguan, gli abitanti del comune di Jihua, nella contea di Nanhai, dissotterrarono tre statue di Buddha in bronzo sulla collina di Tapo e ribattezzarono il comune «Foshan»; da allora il toponimo compare nelle fonti[^gz-gov-2023]. Durante le dinastie Ming e Qing, la città di Foshan fu annoverata, insieme a Hankou (Hubei), Jingdezhen (Jiangxi) e Zhuxianzhen (Henan), tra le «quattro grandi città» della Cina[^gz-gov-2023]. L'opera cantonese (Yueju) è iscritta nella lista del patrimonio immateriale dell'UNESCO, e il distretto di Chancheng ospita il Museo dell'opera cantonese del Guangdong, imperniato sull'opera cantonese e sulla scultura ceramica di Shiwan[^mct-2024]. La stazione di Foshan Ovest è stata aperta nel 2017 e nel 2024 è entrato in servizio il tratto Foshan Ovest–Guangzhou Sud della linea circolare interurbana di Guangfo[^foshan-metro-3]. La linea 3 della metropolitana di Foshan collega la stazione di Foshan Ovest e l'aeroporto di Foshan Shadi alla rete[^foshan-metro-3].
