- 1951年8月，划出湘乡县第三、六、七区建立双峰县，县名取自境内双峰山[^zhwiki]。

县内有“国藩故里、湘军摇篮、女杰之乡”之称。[曾国藩](https://knowledge.ivjn.us/it/people/zeng-guofan.html)故居富厚堂位于荷叶镇，为全国重点文物保护单位；县内另设有蔡和森纪念馆[^hnrb2016]。
