日本国是位于东亚的岛国，由北海道、本州、四国、九州四大岛及约14,000个岛屿组成。总面积约37.8万平方公里，人口约1.2亿（2024年）。首都为东京，是以天皇为国家象征的立宪君主制、议会内阁制国家。

## 行政区划

日本由47个都道府县（1都、1道、2府、43县）组成，按北海道、东北、关东、中部、近畿、中国、四国、九州8个地方划分。

## 铁路网

日本于1964年开通世界首条高速铁路[东海道新干线](/ja/concepts/jp-shinkansen-tokaido.html)，现已形成总长约27,000公里的在来线与新干线网络。新干线网由[山阳新干线](/ja/concepts/jp-shinkansen-sanyo.html)、[东北新干线](/ja/concepts/jp-shinkansen-tohoku.html)、[上越新干线](/ja/concepts/jp-shinkansen-joetsu.html)、[北陆新干线](/ja/concepts/jp-shinkansen-hokuriku.html)、[九州新干线](/ja/concepts/jp-shinkansen-kyushu.html)、[北海道新干线](/ja/concepts/jp-shinkansen-hokkaido.html)、[西九州新干线](/ja/concepts/jp-shinkansen-nishikyushu.html)及山形、秋田迷你新干线组成，由[JR北海道](/ja/organizations/jp-jr-hokkaido.html)、[JR东日本](/ja/organizations/jp-jr-east.html)、[JR东海](/ja/organizations/jp-jr-central.html)、[JR西日本](/ja/organizations/jp-jr-west.html)、[JR九州](/ja/organizations/jp-jr-kyushu.html)、[JR四国](/ja/organizations/jp-jr-shikoku.html)六家公司运营。城市圈的[山手线](/ja/concepts/jp-rail-yamanote.html)、[大阪环状线](/ja/concepts/jp-rail-osaka-loop.html)、[东海道本线](/ja/concepts/jp-rail-tokaido-main.html)及地铁、公交网络承担大众运输。
