## Overzicht
De Michelin-groep werd in 1889 in Clermont-Ferrand opgericht door André en Édouard Michelin. De groep geeft de MICHELIN Gids uit en publiceert restaurantselecties voor de gebieden die de gids bestrijkt[^guide].
## Oorsprong van de gids
De gids was oorspronkelijk bedoeld om automobilisten aan te moedigen op reis te gaan. Hij bevatte kaarten en praktische informatie, bijvoorbeeld over banden verwisselen en tanken, plus adressen om te eten of te overnachten. De eerste edities waren gratis. In 1920 werd de gids te koop aangeboden; hotels en restaurants in Parijs werden per categorie vermeld en betaalde advertenties verdwenen[^guide].
## Beoordeling van restaurants
Toen het restaurantgedeelte meer invloed kreeg, stuurde de gids anonieme inspecteurs op pad om restaurants te bezoeken. In 1926 werden de eerste sterren toegekend aan restaurants in het hogere segment; aanvankelijk was er alleen één ster. In 1931 volgde een indeling van nul tot drie sterren en in 1936 werden de criteria gepubliceerd[^guide].
Volgens de officiële introductiepagina bestrijkt de gids meer dan 30 gebieden op drie continenten, beoordeelt hij ruim 30.000 eetgelegenheden en zijn er wereldwijd meer dan 30 miljoen exemplaren verkocht[^guide].
