Line U2 is 24.5 kilometres long and serves 25 stations. It runs from Niendorf Nord via Schlump and the city centre (Jungfernstieg, Hauptbahnhof Nord) to Mümmelmannsberg. The first section between Schlump and Emilienstraße was opened on 21 October 1913; the line designation U2 was introduced with the timetable change on 22 May 1966. As a result of the line swap of 2009, the U2 has since terminated at Mümmelmannsberg, while the U3 became a ring line again.
The U2 went into operation on 21 October 1913 on the section Schlump–Emilienstraße; in 1914 the extension to Hellkamp followed, whose station was abandoned in 1964 and replaced in 1965 by Lutterothstraße. In the following decades the line was extended westwards: in 1966 to Hagenbecks Tierpark, in 1985 to Niendorf Markt and on 9 March 1991 to today's terminus Niendorf Nord. With the line swap of 2009, the eastern sections of the U2 and U3 beyond the Berliner Tor were exchanged; since then the U2 has ended at Mümmelmannsberg, where it has run since 29 September 1990 (at that time as the U3).
