Line U3 is the ring line (Circle Line) of the Hamburg U-Bahn. It is 20.7 kilometres long and serves 25 stations. The line runs from Wandsbek-Gartenstadt via Barmbek into the ring, which leads through the city centre back to Barmbek. The first sections of the ring were opened in February 1912 – making them among the oldest sections of the Hamburg U-Bahn. After the line swap of 2009, the U3 is once again a ring line with a branch line to Wandsbek-Gartenstadt.
The ring line was built from 1906 to 1912; its first section went into operation in February 1912 between Rathaus, Hauptbahnhof and Barmbek – making the U3 the oldest line of the network. With the opening of the line to Horner Rennbahn on 2 January 1967 and its continuation to Billstedt, the U3 no longer ran as a ring but as a diameter line until 2009. In the line swap of 2009, the eastern sections of the U2 and U3 beyond the Berliner Tor were exchanged; since then the U3 has again been a ring line with a branch to Wandsbek-Gartenstadt.
