History

The U4 was opened in 2012 as the youngest line of the network between Billstedt and HafenCity Universität and is the first line to be established as a branch of an existing line; between Jungfernstieg and Billstedt it shares the tracks with the U2. From Jungfernstieg, a dedicated route leads in a wide 180-degree arc across the Neustadt to the Überseequartier opened in 2012 and on to HafenCity Universität. On 7 December 2018 the line was extended by 1.3 kilometres to the new terminus Elbbrücken, where a connection to the S-Bahn (S3/S5) will be established in the future.
