Cai Zhong is a fictional character in Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Both Wikidata and the Chinese Wikipedia article are titled 蔡中, so the heading stays as it is. Wikidata describes him as a military officer of the Jing province army, gives the dynasty of the work's setting as Han, and records his death in 208.[1][2]

Identity

Chinese Wikipedia says that in the novel he and his brother Cai He are both cousins of Cai Mao, and that they went over to Cao Cao together with Cai Mao and Zhang Yun.[2]

In the novel

According to Chinese Wikipedia's summary, after Cai Mao was wrongly killed by Cao Cao, Cai Zhong and his brother Cai He were sent to Eastern Wu by Cao Cao as spies, but Zhou Yu, the commander in chief of Wu, saw through them and turned the scheme back on Cao Cao, making him believe that Huang Gai and Gan Ning wanted to surrender to the Cao army. On the night the battle of Red Cliffs began, Gan Ning led Cai Zhong deep into the Cao camp, and he was then cut down from his horse. The article's reference is the novel itself, and it lists Cai Mao under see also.[2]
