Gongsun Sheng is a character in the novel Water Margin. Wikidata names him Gongsun Sheng. The same materials also give the Daoist name Yiqing, the nickname Dragon Entering the Clouds, the star name Tianxianxing, and the form Gongsun Yiqing. The Daoist name, the nickname, and the star name do not replace the title. He is from Jizhou, a wandering Daoist of the Zixu temple, and a disciple of Luo the Perfected. This entry records him as a Water Margin figure, and the story is set in the Great Song.[1][2]
The mountain, and the return home
He is tall and large, with slanting brows, almond eyes, and whiskers, a short robe, hemp shoes, and a pine-grain ancient-ingot sword. He is skilled both in Daoist arts and with spear and staff. Hearing that Yang Zhi was escorting Cai Jing's birthday gift, he thought the wealth unjust and went to Chao Gai to plan its seizure. After the affair he drove off He Tao and went up to Liangshan. When Song Jiang had been rescued from the execution ground at Jiangzhou, Gongsun Sheng missed his old mother, went home, and did not return. When Song Jiang attacked Gaotang and lost to Gao Lian's sorcery, he was asked down again. With the orthodox method of the five thunders and the heavenly stars, taught by Luo the Perfected, he broke Gao Lian's art. Shi Jin's first battle at Mangdang Mountain went badly. Gongsun Sheng arrived with troops, set an eight-trigram formation, broke Fan Rui's sorcery, and received Fan Rui and the others. When the hundred and eight gathered, he served as the strategist who kept the secrets.[2]
After the amnesty
After the amnesty he followed the campaigns against Liao and Tian Hu. Tian Hu's strategist Qiao Daoqing defeated the Liangshan men with sorcery. Gongsun Sheng broke that art and received him. Against Wang Qing, Lu Junyi fought Li Zhu, called the Master of the Golden Sword, at Nanfeng and could not match the sword. Gongsun Sheng arrived with the center army and by art made the sword leave Li Zhu's hand, so Lu Junyi captured him alive. After Wang Qing was pacified, Song Jiang camped at Chenqiao post outside the eastern capital. Gongsun Sheng remembered Luo the Perfected's words, return when you meet the Bian, took leave of Song Jiang, and went back to the Mountain of the Two Immortals in Jizhou. He did not go with the Liangshan company again and did not join the campaign against Fang La. He studied the Way with his teacher and cared for his mother until the end of his years.
