Character in Journey to the West

The Black Bear Spirit is a character in Journey to the West. Wikidata records him as a character of the novel with the Chinese label Black Bear Spirit, other names such as the Bear Monster, and the English alias Black Wind Demon. This is a monster's title in the novel and not a verified personal name, so the heading is left as it was.[1][2]

In the book

The Chinese Wikipedia list of Journey to the West characters has a section on the Black Wind Monster (the Black Bear Spirit), to which this entry corresponds. According to that section, the Black Wind Monster lives in a cave on Black Wind Mountain and is a dark-skinned big man with a black-tasseled spear. Unlike ordinary monsters, he is rather good-natured and is friends with the elder Jinchi of the Guanyin Monastery. When he sees the monastery on fire, he rushes to help put it out, but on the way he spots Tang Sanzang's brocade cassock, conceives a wicked plan and steals it, and so clashes with Sun Wukong. In the end he is subdued by a trick of Sun Wukong and the bodhisattva Guanyin, and Guanyin takes him on as a guardian spirit of the mountain.[2]

Companions

The same section says the scholar in white (a white snake spirit) and Lingxuzi (a gray wolf spirit) are friends of the Black Wind Monster, and both are killed by Sun Wukong.[2]
