Character in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms

Jia Hua is a fictional character in the novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Wikidata's simplified Chinese label is Jia Hua, and the English label is Jia Hua, so the title stays the personal name. This entry records him as a military commander under Sun Quan, and the story is set in the Han.[1][2]

Hefei

When Sun Quan fought Cao Cao at Hefei, Jia Hua and Song Qian guarded Sun Quan with halberds. Yue Jin of Cao Cao's army came straight for Sun Quan. Jia Hua and Song Qian met him and drove him off. Song Qian pursued and was shot dead by Li Dian. The article does not say Jia Hua died in that fight.[2]

The Sweet Dew Temple

Liu Bei came to marry Sun Quan's sister, Lady Sun. At the Sweet Dew Temple, Sun Quan's mother, Lady Wu, received Liu Bei. Sun Quan and Lü Fan planned to have Jia Hua hide three hundred soldiers under the veranda and kill Liu Bei while Lady Wu was not watching. Lady Wu thought well of Liu Bei. Zhao Yun found the hidden troops and told Liu Bei, who told Lady Wu. She was furious. Sun Quan and Lü Fan put the blame on Jia Hua, and Lady Wu ordered Sun Quan to behead him. Liu Bei spoke for him. Jia Hua was pardoned and left the temple.[2]

A later play

In the Peking opera The Sweet Dew Temple, Jia Hua is played as a clown. He wears four command flags at his waist, holds a spear, and carries a hammer, a knife, a sword, a dagger, and other weapons. He is set on killing Liu Bei, and Liu Bei's plea saves him.[2]
