鳩摩羅什，天竺人也。世為國相。父鳩摩羅炎，聰懿有大節，將嗣相位，乃辭避出家，東渡蔥嶺。龜茲王聞其名，郊迎之，請為國師。王有妹，年二十，才悟明敏，諸國交娉，並不許，及見炎，心欲當之，王乃逼以妻焉。既而羅什在胎，其母慧解倍常。及年七歲，母遂與俱出家。
