Liu Wu'er is a character in Dream of the Red Chamber. The cited Chinese Wikipedia says she is the daughter of Mother Liu, a kitchen servant, and that she is called Liu Wu'er because she is the fifth child in the family. Wikidata uses the same name. Wu'er is only the short form, so the title stays Liu Wu'er.[2][1]
In the novel
She is a friend of Fangguan. In the poria-frost case, Lin Zhixiao's wife suspected her of being the thief. Wang Xifeng wanted her beaten forty strokes and then sold or married off. Jia Baoyu, Ping'er and others helped, and she was released. When the Grand View Garden was searched, Lady Wang said Liu Wu'er had already died of illness. In the Cheng-Gao edition she does not die and becomes Jia Baoyu's maid.[2]
