Ning Sui is a fictional character in Romance of the Three Kingdoms and a general of Shu Han. Wikidata writes his Chinese name with the traditional form, simplified as 宁随, and also lists the variant spelling 甯隨. The Chinese Wikipedia article is titled the same, so the heading stays the name as given in the novel. The story is set in Shu Han and he is recorded as male.[1][2]

In the novel

The Chinese Wikipedia article says that some editions write the surname with a variant character pronounced the same as the common Ning, and that in the novel he is Jiang Wei's deputy. In the Wei conquest of Shu, the Wei general Zhuge Xu camped at the Yinping bridgehead and cut off Jiang Wei's retreat. Ning Sui advised Jiang Wei to strike what the enemy must rescue, and to feign an attack on Yongzhou so that Zhuge Xu would turn back to save it. Zhuge Xu fell for it and, fearing for his rear, broke camp and withdrew. When he later saw what Jiang Wei intended, he at once turned back to block him, but he was a step too late, and led his troops to Jiange to find Zhong Hui. This episode is in chapter 117 of the novel.[2]

A further remark in the article

The article's section on related works has one sentence saying that in the Jiang Wei biography of the Records of the Three Kingdoms he is the new identity of Ma Su, who died in prison after the loss of Jieting, and that he helped the northern campaigns as Jiang Wei's adviser. The sentence is unclear and gives no basis, so it is not adopted here and is noted only because the article says it.[2]
