Character in Water Margin

Wu Yong is a character in Water Margin. Wikidata uses Wu Yong as his name. The cited Chinese Wikipedia gives his courtesy name as Xuejiu, his Daoist name as Master Jialiang, and his nickname as the Star of Wisdom, so the title stays the personal name. This entry records his death in 1124.[1][2]

Origins

He is from Dongxi village in Yuncheng county, Jizhou, Shandong. He and Chao Gai had been friends since childhood, and his companions respectfully called him Scholar Wu. He had worked as a tutor in wealthy households. The page says he was learned in military stratagems, clear-browed and fair, with a long beard, and skilled with a pair of bronze chains.[2]

Liangshan

He later planned the seizure, by Chao Gai and others, of the hundred thousand strings of birthday tribute that Governor Liang was sending to Cai Jing. Warned by Song Jiang, they reached Liangshan before the pursuit. After arriving, Wu Yong provoked Lin Chong into killing Wang Lun and setting Chao Gai up as chief. Wu Yong himself became Liangshan's chief strategist, and both civil and military business passed through his hands. When the band attacked Gaotang and Gao Lian's sorcery could not be broken, he sent Li Kui and Dai Zong to fetch the recluse Gongsun Sheng, who defeated Gao Lian with the orthodox rite of the five thunders. After the amnesty he advised Song Jiang and Lu Junyi in the campaigns against Liao, Tian Hu, Wang Qing and Fang La, and was made martial-integrity general and Chengxuan commissioner of Wusheng army.[2]

Death

In a dream he learned that Song Jiang had been murdered. Unable to repay that bond, he and Hua Rong hanged themselves before Song Jiang's grave at Liao'erwa outside the south gate of Chuzhou, and were buried beside the tomb.[2]
