historical figure

Yan Yu was a man of Wucheng county in Wu commandery at the end of the Eastern Han and a younger brother of the bandit chief Yan Baihu. Wikidata's Chinese label is 嚴輿, written 严舆 in simplified characters, and the Chinese Wikipedia article is also under 嚴輿, so the title is unchanged. Wikidata records his death in 196 and lists Yan Baihu as his sibling, and the opening of the Chinese Wikipedia article dates his life from the second century to 196.[1][2]

Killed by Sun Ce

Chinese Wikipedia says that Yan Yu was strong and agile and was said to be able to leap up from a seated position. When Sun Ce attacked Yan Baihu, Yan Yu went at his brother's order to Sun Ce's camp to sue for peace. At their meeting Sun Ce struck the mat with a sharp blade and Yan Yu flinched. Sun Ce laughed and said he had heard Yan Yu could leap from a seat and was nimble and was only joking. Yan Yu answered that the sight of a weapon always made him do that. Hearing this, Sun Ce knew that he was in fact a poor fighter and immediately killed him with a hand-halberd. Yan Baihu and the others were terrified when they heard that Yan Yu, famed for his strength, had been killed. The article credits this account to the Wu Lu quoted in the commentary to the Biography of Sun Ce in the Records of the Three Kingdoms.[2]

In the novel

The article also records that in Romance of the Three Kingdoms he first appears ordered by his brother Yan Baihu to resist Sun Ce and is driven back by Jiang Qin and Chen Wu. Later, in a negotiation over wine with Sun Ce, he is asked what Yan Baihu intends and answers that his brother demands to share Jiangdong equally. Sun Ce angrily says that a rat dares to treat him as an equal and orders him killed. Yan Yu stands up and draws his sword, and Sun Ce kills him with a thrown sword and has his head sent into the city. The article cites chapter 15 of the novel.[2]
