Overview
San Francisco (also known in Chinese as 三藩市) is a city in the U.S. state of California, at the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay. It is one of the few consolidated city-counties in the United States, with the city and the county of San Francisco sharing the same territory.
Administration and population
Spanish colonists established a presidio and a mission (Presidio of San Francisco and Mission San Francisco de Asís) at the northern tip of the peninsula on 29 June 1776, naming it after St Francis of Assisi. After the Mexican–American War the area became part of the United States in 1848, and the city was incorporated on 15 April 1850. The 2020 United States census recorded a population of 873,965, with an estimate of 826,079 for 2025. The city and county cover about 600.65 km², of which about 121.51 km² is land.
Transport and mobility companies
San Francisco is one of the birthplaces of the ride-hailing and autonomous driving industry: both Uber and Lyft are headquartered here, and several autonomous driving companies test and operate vehicles in the city.
